On August 20, 1920, representatives from four Ohio League football teams, the Canton Bulldogs, Akron Pros, Cleveland Tigers, and Dayton Triangles, gathered in Canton, Ohio, to form what would become the American Professional Football Association (APFA), the precursor to the NFL. This meeting was the beginning of an effort to bring organization, consistency, and credibility to professional football, which at the time was fragmented and struggling to gain the same level of respect as college football.
The group of representatives, including legendary athlete Jim Thorpe and team owners like Ralph Hay, aimed to unify the sport under a single league. At this initial meeting, they discussed the establishment of a salary cap, the prohibition of signing college players, and the need to respect other teams’ contracts to eliminate bidding wars for players. The goal was to elevate the standard of professional football and foster cooperation among teams.
This initial meeting set the stage for a larger gathering on September 17, 1920, where more teams from across the Midwest and the East Coast joined, officially forming the APFA. The league’s name would be changed to the National Football League (NFL) in 1922, marking the start of its journey to becoming one of the most powerful sports leagues in the world.
Jim Thorpe, who was also a player for the Canton Bulldogs, was elected as the first president of the APFA, lending the new league credibility. Although scheduling was initially chaotic, each team set its own schedule, and some games were played against non-league teams. The foundation was laid for a more structured and professional league.
The APFA’s first season ended with the Akron Pros being awarded the championship, but the league’s loose organization led to disagreements and claims from other teams. Despite these early challenges, the formation of the APFA marked a significant turning point in the history of professional football, laying the groundwork for the modern NFL.
Over the decades, the NFL grew in size and popularity, overcoming numerous obstacles to become the dominant force in American sports it is today. The 1920 meeting in Canton, though humble and modest, was the catalyst for a century of growth, innovation, and unforgettable moments in sports history.
